CONDITION - Subjugated Fate 7“ (iron lung - CØNDITIØN is back with a masterful stroke of devastation to follow up 2015's Actual Hell. They say some things get better with age and in this case we couldn't agree more. "Subjugated Fate" is an exploded blister on the rotten skin of humanity. And like that jingle that won't stop playing in your head, a festering sore in the aural canal. Still big, still vicious and always pure American D-Beat. Accept nothing less. 300 copies on radiation yellow vinyl with hand stamped labels housed in JAYBO art on a textured folder sleeve. Includes a download. Recorded in Lost Angeles by MIKE KRIEBEL. Punk.) 11.00

LP

ÁINE O'DWYER - Gallarais LP (mie - After releasing the now long sold out and incredible Music for Church Cleaners 2LP a few years ago MIE Music brings you Áine O'Dwyer's new record ‚Gallarais'. Sleep music, the underworld Twenty-six letters were sent, not far to travel, from Proust, hypersensitive writer to his upstairs neighbour, Marie Williams – ‘I was rather troubled by noise . . . I was trying to sleep off an attack. But at 8am the tapping on the parquet was so distinct that the Veronal didn’t work and I woke with the attack still raging.’ Marie Williams played harp, though it was not the harp that dragged Proust from the fumes of a bedroom armed against asthma attacks, cork-lined to smother noise. Hammerings disturbed him, the banging of carpet fitters, crates nailed shut. Similar disturbances creep into his books periodically: the ‘disagreeable’ noise of a newly installed heating boiler, ‘a sort of spasmodic hiccup’, which nonetheless served on every re-hearing to revive images of misty landscapes caught in his memory and ‘studied’ during the first morning the heater began its work. Proust spoke of an imperceptible breath, ‘like the wind breathing into the stem of a reed’, mingling with the subdued song of his dying grandmother’s breathing, ‘swift and light . . . gliding like a skater towards the delicious fluid’, the human sighs released at the approach of death, suggesting pain or pleasure ‘in those who can no longer feel’. David Toop, on hearing Áine O’Dwyer’s Gallarais and the subsequent conversations between November 2016 and January 2017.) 18.00

BRIGITTE FONTAINE & ARESKI - L'INCENDIE LP (byg - BACK IN PRINT! A reissue on 180-gram vinyl with reproduced artwork and labels. A wonderful work of minimal ethno-folk by the graceful Brigitte Fontaine and Areski Belkacem.) 18.00

CHELSEA WOLFE - hiss spun DLP (sargent house - 2LP with custom etching on side D + Download Card. "When musicians have this intensity in them, they often get to it sooner and stay put. Ms. Wolfe sounds like she's using it by choice, not disposition; she can use different kinds of darkness as colour or tincture." - New York Times "The reigning dark priestess of goth-scarred art rock." - Rolling Stone Hiss Spun is Chelsea Wolfe's sixth album, following her acclaimed 2015 album Abyss. Hiss Spun is at once dynamic, heavy, and raw. Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the album was conceived as an emotional purge, a means of coming to terms with the tumult of the outside world by exploring the complexities of one's inner unrest. Every Chelsea Wolfe album is cathartic, but never before has both the artist and her audience so desperately needed this kind of emotional purging.) 30.00

THE DINOSAURS - same LP (bdr  - The DINOSAURS were a garage-punk band that formed in St. Louis in 1978. Made up of misfits and outsiders, they existed alongside but apart from the emerging punk rock movement. To record collectors, the Dinosaurs are the creators of the sought after “Rock & Roll Moron” 45, which the band self-released in 1979. But to most patrons of underground culture around the Midwest, the Dinosaurs are known as the starting point in the musical history of BOB REUTER, St. Louis’ D.I.Y. “Renaissance Man” who gained regional success as a songwriter, radio DJ (“Bob’s Scratchy Records”), lo-fi photographer, and late-in-life author. Inspired by the new wave counterculture as much as the pop sensibilities it rebelled against, the Dinosaurs played a mix of proto-punk and classic rock, delighting some while offending others. Consisting of four ne’er-do-well city boys, the Dinosaurs were defiantly uncouth and had an explosive energy that mirrored the raw aggression of the forgotten, post-industrial Midwest city they called home. Alongside the catchy and compulsive songwriting of the band’s founder, Bob Reuter, the Dinosaurs became oddities in St. Louis’ growing punk scene. They made an initial splash as the weekend house band in a neighborhood dive bar playing for four hours a night. Their sets attracted a mixed crowd of factory workers, freaks and oddballs who fell in love with the wild musicians and the unruly atmosphere their music created. After a few months and one too many violent incidents, the band was asked to move on. The Dinosaurs drifted from venue to venue around the St. Louis metropolitan area, bringing their small but rowdy and loyal following with them wherever they went. At times they were celebrated, but at other times their brazen attitudes brought them into conflict with the rest of the scene. After a year and a half and one self-released 45, the band imploded on stage and went their separate ways.) 18.00

HYPNOBEAT - Prototech DLP (dark entries - Dark Entries and Serendip Lab have teamed up to release ‘Prototech’, the first vinyl retrospective by German electronic trio Hypnobeat, recorded 1984-86. James Dean Brown and Pietro Insipido formed Hypnobeat in 1983, but it was the addition of Victor Sol only a few months later that found the project reaching, as Brown puts it, "the desired level of technical sophistication." In time, Tobias Freund also lent his talents (and equipment) to this loose-fit sonic scheme, where the protagonists sought a new, electronic manifestation of mankind’s tribal music roots. Two cassette releases surfaced – 1985’s "Huggables", and "Specials/Spatials" the following year. By this point the Frankfurt-based group had already explored fiercely mechanical creative expression through various configurations of hardware and personnel, revolving around core ingredients such as the TR-808, TB-303 and MC-202. The project lived on in spirit as Brown activated Narcotic Syntax in the 90s. While a more modern, digital concern, rooted in the Perlon label family, NS still channeled the Hypnobeat concept of a "new tribalism", not least on their "Provocative Percussion" double 12" released in 2006. For all the punky veneer, there are instances where these tracks reach staggering levels of sophistication, not least on "Slash! Buffalo Eats Brass" with its intricately programmed 303 lines and nimble beats that sound a far cry from most machine music made in 1986. Prescient "Can God Rewind?" is also dazzling in the complexity of its percussion and the richness of its synth lines in C as they throb out a bastardised version of acidic Disco straight out of the rhythm collider. Elsewhere, some tracks are more primal in their execution. Visceral opening track "The Arumbaya Fetish" was a cathartic venting of Brown’s least favourite sound on the 808, the iconic cowbell, while the astounding proto-Acid miniature "Moon Jump" places limber 303 lead lines in a hail of thunderstruck patterns. "Kilian" has a stripped down quality that speaks more to the industrial era that Hypnobeat was conceived in, and "Mission In Congo" is a raw, reverb-soaked drum workout that captures the percussive-obsessive nature of Hypnobeat perfectly. Six of the seven tracks selected on this collection were primarily powered by two 808s. "I am amazed that the release sounds like we really had a plan back then…" states Brown, but this accidental magic is in fact the raison d’etre of Hypnobeat. They weren’t the only ones prefiguring the next big revolutions in electronic music in the mid 80s, but there certainly weren’t many artists stumbling across modes of expression that sound so relevant today. All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in a jacket featuring cave engravings by Pietro Insipido of an archer and animal printed in a wallpaper pattern style designed by Eloise Leigh. Each copy includes an transparent insert of an x-ray photograph from 1984 of Romulus Cœurque holding the circuit board of a BOSS DR-55 rhythm machine.) 25.00

HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER - Hallelujah Anyhow LP Hallelujah Anyhow is the new studio album from HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER. Its ten new songs, penned by HGM principal M.C. TAYLOR, were recorded with BRAD COOK, PHIL COOK, JOSH KAUFMAN, DARREN JESSEE, MICHAEL LEWIS and EVAN RINGEL. ALEXANDRA SAUSER-MONNIG, TIFT MERRITT, SKYLAR GUDASZ, TAMISHA WADEN, MAC MCCAUGHAN and JOHN PAUL WHITE provided vocal harmonies. “I see the dark clouds. I was designed to see them. They’re the same clouds of fear and destruction that have darkened the world since Revelations, just different actors. But this music is for hope. That’s the only thing I want to say about it. Love is the only way out. I’ve never been afraid of the darkness; it’s just a different kind of light. And if some days that belief comes harder than others, hallelujah anyhow.”—M.C. Taylor.) 20.00

KEINE AHNUNG - Keine Ahnung LP (dark entries - Keine Ahnung was a quartet from Wörth am Rhein, Germany formed in 1980. The original line up was Rolf Schmuck, Franz H. Rodenkirchen, Elke Fuchs and Olaf Schumacher. Hermann Kopp from Stuttgart, a friend of the band, contributed a composition on their first LP and became a full member in 1985. Taking cues from Conrad Schnitzler, Tuxedomoon and Dome, the band members shared a common interest in industrial, pop, avant garde literature and cinema. Their controversial name translates to “Don’t know” or “Haven’t got a clue” in German. The quartet would record three LPs in 6 years, two of which remain unreleased.   In March 1983, Keine Ahnung recorded their self-produced and financed debut LP in two days in a small studio in Stuttgart (12 hours total). The mixing was done in one day in a studio in Karlsruhe, April 1983. The self-titled LP was released later that summer on their own PASSIV label in an edition of 1000 copies. This record obtained recognition far beyond the German borders. Keine Ahnung in the studio and live were completely different. Studio time was expensive in these days, so the music was minimal electronic pop, expertly crafted and razor sharp man machine music. The live sound utilized more complex synthesizers, tapes, guitars, metal percussion and custom built electronics. The beats and bass lines came from the Roland 606/303 duo triggering a KORG MS-20 for the bass drum. The track "Funkbild DPA" is a spontaneous "live in the studio" recording, that gives a hint of what the live sound was like. All four members would take turns singing and playing the instruments.   The original master tape was transferred by Frieder Butzmann in Berlin. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. The vinyl is housed in an exact replica jacket designed by Rolf Schmuck, featuring black and white texture and cartoon drawings the band members. Each copy includes a double sided insert featuring lyrics, notes and photos of the band.) 18.00

LARRY CONKLIN & JOCHEN BLUM - jackdaw LP (tompkins - The fourth LP in Tompkins Square's series of private press solo guitar reissues, all by artists featured on the compilation Imaginational Anthem Vol 8 : The Private Press. LARRY CONKLIN bought his first guitar, a Gibson J-45, in 1970, after he got out of the army. “I taught myself to play. I wrote songs and instrumentals (at that time Bert Jansch was my guiding light). I listened to a lot of people—Leo Kottke, John Renbourn, Django Reinhardt, Lonnie Johnson, Robert Johnson—and especially Rev. Gary Davis, who played only with his thumb and index finger as I did.” Larry’s first record, Jackdaw was self-released in 1980 and includes beautiful solo 12 string acoustic guitar tracks, as well as gentle acoustic duets with violinist, JOCHEN BLUM. Larry met Jochen in Florence, Italy, in 1980 and commented that “his violin playing put excitement into my music. It was special. I pressed 300 copies and sent them out into the world.”  Larry wrote '”The Diamond Cutter” in 1978 while going to Seattle Community College, in a creative writing course. The inspiration for the song, according to Larry “was a girl who wrote a poem to a departing lover - You only deal with cut glass. I deal with diamonds. I introduced myself to her as the Diamond Cutter.” In 1985 while living in Berlin, Larry got a letter from a woman in Seattle who informed him that Charles Royer was running for a third term as Mayor of Seattle and that “The Diamond Cutter” was being used as a campaign song. Royer won, November 5th 1985.) 18.00

LE SEUL ELEMENT - demon LP (The 2017 album from French experimental noise wave artist Le Seul Élément, including a guest appearance by darkwave darlings Bestial Mouths! On their debut album Demon, Le Seul Élément combines elements of piano, noise and darkwave, weaving textures and melodies with incredible skill. A rare solo project from a French artist who has mainly been involved in collaborative projects, Demon abounds with a sense of newly found artistic freedom, taking it’s time to build its tense sonic textures. There’s a vast, cinematic quality to LSE’s music, which makes it no surprise that one of Demon’s tracks, the melancholic epic “Mad Mersey Beat,” has already been tapped for use in an upcoming horror movie Devil’s Domain starring Michael Madsen (Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs). The album also features a brilliant collaboration with Lynette Cerezo, vocalist and founding member of dark electronic band and fellow Cleopatra Records artist Bestial Mouths, on the track “Her Eyes,” which can be streamed below.

MAPACHE - Mapache LP (“Close your eyes and imagine the Everly Brothers wearing Tie-Dyed Nudie Suits. Okay, now open them. There’s Mapache. Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci are barely in their 20s and already rising to the top of the new wave of West Coast Cosmic Americana. Born and raised in Glendale, California, their breathtaking harmonies and heartfelt yet heady sound was honed by surfing the beaches and exploring the deserts and canyons of their native California.  “The lineage of the band has blood running back to the first wave of psychedelic country revivalists Beachwood Sparks—Clay is a cousin of main man Chris Gunst. Chris and I went to bat for the band by helping them score their first club shows and recording sessions with Dan Horne.  “Dan eventually produced this album at the vintage analog halls of legendary Valentine Recording Studios, where the tape rolled and captured the live spirited harmony, skillful strumming and genuinely well-crafted songs that everyone from Chris Robinson to Jonathan Richman have fallen in love with. The real charm lies in the simplicity of their voices and the songs that recall a young Gene Clark, The Louvins, Crosby, Stills and Townes ... it’s all there and more.)18.00

MONARCH - Never Forever DLP (prfound lore - With their new album Never Forever, France’s premiere extreme doom metal band Monarch take their singular style of punishing ritualistic amplifier worship toward melancholic territory. More ghostly, atmospheric, and haunting than 2014’s Sabbracadaver, this latest also sees more form and shape with their songwriting while still harnessing that plodding, down-tuned, crushing low-end that is their signature backdrop to vocalist Emilie Bresson’s enchanting and spellbinding vocals. With this album’s melancholic tone, Bresson’s vocals are increasingly ethereal and delicate, while still juxtaposing them with her otherworldly harsh shrieks.  Since 2002, Monarch have been France’s most recognized and active band in the scene, supported through countless tours all over the world (recently including multiple ones of Japan) and myriad releases on multiple respected labels, alongside such like-minded bands as Corrupted, Noothgrush, Burning Witch, and Khanate.) 31.00

O TERCO - Terco LP (O Terço was one of the first progressive bands from Brazil. The band, whose name means "rosary beads" in Portuguese, first formed in 1968. On their first album, O Terço (1970) was not yet full on prog, but it is a seminal work in the history Brazilian progressive music. There are obvious influences of the Moody Blues, and Pink Floyd.) 16.00

PRIMITIVE MAN - Caustic 2LP (relapse - Denver’s nihilistic trio PRIMITIVE MAN return with Caustic, their second full-length offering of soul-crushing blackened doom and noise-ridden claustrophobia. Recorded and produced at Flatline Audio by Dave Otero (Cobalt, Cephalic Carnage, Cattle Decapitation), Caustic is 12 songs and 75+ minutes of bloodcurdling howls, abysmal tones and dense, unsettling feedback spewing forth a cesspool of utter misery. With lyrical themes ranging from political corruption, personal struggle and the crumbling social climate facing the world today, Caustic serves as a cataclysmic soundtrack for a world gone awry.) 25.00

RAVEN - who do you see LP (goldne - Originally from Terre Haute Indiana, members of Raven played and toured with bands such as Reo Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, Dan fogelberg etc.. George Phelps who had joined The “Carnations” met up with “Goliath” members in a studio and through a myriad of circumstances, teaming up with drummer Robert Wolff (ex “Micah”) these musicians merged into “Raven” in Louisville KY in late 1972. From this moment on, the band toured extensively through 24 states non-stop for the next 4 years before recording this material in 1976, unreleased until today. The material was recorded in Atlanta Georgia at a studio called “The Sound Pit” Memories of going into the studio at night and working until the sun came up and feeling like I was floating on a cloud because it sounded so good (Doug – Raven’s keyboardist) Soon after the recording was completed, Raven got a record deal with Capricorn records. 2 weeks later, they went bankrupt. The tapes were subsequently destroyed in a fire. Strictly limited to 500 copies in high quality old-style tip-on Jacket + Obi.) 20.00

SHANNON LAY - Living Water LP (mare - Received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork.  The debut release on Mare, Kevin Morby’s new imprint with Woodsist Records, Shannon Lay’s Living Water is an instant classic. Recorded by Emmet Kelly (Cairo Gang, Bonnie Prince Billy, Ty Segall) in his Los Angeles home studio, this is an album where the room reacts to the music taking shape around it.  Lay’s voice transcends time and space. One can’t tell if she’s old or new, if she’s sitting next to you, on a mountain top, or down in some canyon. Her second album to be released in 2017, she is a prolific songwriter, who lives and breathes melody, with guitar skills to boot. Despite its fourteen tracks, the album comes in well under forty minutes, but like Pink Moon or Just Another Diamond Day before it, this is music so potent it exists outside the realms of time—in a world specific only to itself and the new feelings it creates.) 20.00

SIMON JOYNER - Step Into The Earthquake DLP (US Press! Simon Joyner is among America’s best songwriters, so says Gillian Welch, Conor Oberst, Kevin Morby, and others. With his new double album, Step Into The Earthquake, he strikes for the personal while acknowledging that the times they are a-changin’ around us again. Things are leaning shitty right now, and the characters in Joyner’s songs experience the dissolution of comfort amid anxious concerns regarding our turbulent times. To record, Joyner’s band, The Ghosts, holed up with longtime collaborator, Michael Krassner (Boxhead Ensemble), in Omaha’s ARC Studio, developing songs from skeletal foundations to full-on group efforts.  Joyner’s vision may be dark but it stops short of nihilism. Where do we go from here? The best move toward answering that question is knowing where we stand right now. This expansive album offers a poet’s truthful view, however disconcerting, that to survive whatever is coming for us, we have to confront and understand it first. So, go ahead and step into the earthquake.  “Omaha has given us the reigning heir to Henry Miller’s dark emotional mirror, Townes Van Zandt’s three-chord moan, and Lou Reed’s warehouse minimalism: his name is Simon Joyner.” — Gillian Welch  “Pound for pound Simon Joyner is my favorite lyricist of all time.” — Conor Oberst “Simon’s always been a secret handshake amongst me and my peers. He’s a pioneer.” — Kevin Morby) 25.00

SUTEKH HEXEN / HISSING - split LP (flenser - Hissing and Sutekh Hexen are two of the murkiest, most cacophonous groups operating in the margins of the contemporary metal underground. Now, these hellish projects come together to release a split album on The Flenser. Since 2008, Sutekh Hexen have turned the paradigm of black metal completely on its ear. The group creates what can be described as a dense tapestry of black noise, or a wall of intricate tones deconstructing itself brick by brick. Their rich, unparalleled compositions cultivate further interest with each listen. Founded in 2014 out of a mutual interest in deranged and punishing sounds, Seattle’s Hissing is often described as “blackened sludge.” This does little justice describing the harsh, dissonant soundscapes created by this trio. To date they have released two EPs through Disorder Recordings and Southern Lord, and have a full-length forthcoming.) 18.00

VILE CREATURE - a steady descent into the soil LP (broken limb - A Steady Descent into the Soil is the debut LP from St. Catharines, Ontario's Vile Creature. Crafted during winter 2014 and recorded in an abandoned school house in rural Canada, the record acts as a cull of emotions derived from the inherent violence and hatred experienced growing up queer around the millennium, a time much less homo-positive than today's landscape. Three songs of fuzzed-out atmospheric doom are sprawled over nearly 40 minutes, creating a record described as "wonderfully unique" and "undeniably original" by noisey & metalinjection, respectively.) 14.00

TAPES

HAUNTER / SOVEREIGN - split TAPE (For a scene which was once so reviled, the US black metal movement is a treasure trove of creativity. From sea to boiling sea, there are countless bands who either add a tremendous weight to black metal or whet its ever-dulling blade. Two younger bands, Haunter and Sovereign, represent this pummeling power and sharp ferocity, respectively. Together on this split, they write a greater truth concerning the creative spirit of American Black Metal in the new century." ( invisible oranges )) 6.00

MAG

COMETBUS - #58 MAG (A teenager finds solace in a diner full of grumpy seniors during the heydey of San Francisco punk. The latest Cometbus zine reads like a novel, but is it fiction or thinly disguised autobiography? That's up to the reader to decide and AARON never to let on. Either way, it captures the spirit of a place and an era, from the sexual and racial politics to the sour taste of the coffee and the backstory of the woman glaring at you) 3.00
